Judged and Found Judging!

Christians have been judged and found judging.  How many of us have heard the old adage, “I don’t go to church because Christians are judgmental”?  I suppose there is some truth to that statement.  However, I would quickly add that that is true of all humanity.  We are put on this earth, observing and reacting to activities, words, and scenes all around us.  Our sensory skills hone in and makes judgments about the world and it’s inhabitants in a split-nanosecond (without even trying)!

I have found that the Bible does NOT teach to not judge altogether.  But, we are called to righteous judgements.  We are even offered the gift of discernment.  We are told that we will know a person by his or her fruit (the stuff their lives produce for all to see and judge).   Jesus talks of forgiveness (which btw involves a judgment on the forgiver’s part to sentence the other party guilty and in need of forgiveness).  He says that a person who does evil to your person over and over again is to be forgiven but also forgotten.  In other words, move on … “Don’t cast your pearls to the swine,” Jesus said.

Now, before you get excited and decide to throw a “Gift of Judging” party, there is a corrective clause in this whole judging business, “In the same way you judge, you will be judged.”  So if you want grace, extend grace.  If you want the sword, die by the sword.  If you want to be in right standing with the King, make judgments that bring repentance, reconciliation, and restoration!
